How does the Alexander Technique help performers?

Picture

The Alexander Technique is a way of teaching you how to perform with ease.  It is a tool that enhances your ability to become aware of physical habits that interfere with your work and helps you to eliminate rigidity and excessive or unnecessary tensions.

Students of the Alexander Technique learn a practical approach...

and become more comfortable in auditions.  They learn how to alleviate performance anxiety so that they naturally experience more authenticity in their work.   Many performers who have “hit a wall” creatively, or have faced daunting and career-ending repetitive strain injuries have found relief with Alexander Technique.  It is important to note that Alexander Technique does not replace or interfere with your particular method of study, but augments any method of study, allowing you to create more space for freedom, clarity, and precision.

Benefits of study:
  • Enhanced sense of presence and poise
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Increased breath capacity
  • Increased vocal clarity and power
  • Flexibility (in all senses of the word)
  • Increased energy
  • Diminished stress and performance anxiety

“I can immediately tell the difference between actors who have studied the Alexander Technique, and those who haven’t” -Sam Mendes, Academy Award-Winning Director (American Beauty)

“Of all the disciplines that form the actor training program, none is more vital, enriching and transformative than the Alexander Technique.”-Harold Stone, Associate Director, Theatre Department, Juilliard School, NY

“I find the Alexander Technique very helpful in my work. Things happen without you trying. They get to be light and relaxed. You must get an Alexander Teacher to show it to you.”
-John Cleese

“The many benefits that the Alexander technique afforded us as actors included minimized tension, centeredness, vocal relaxation and responsiveness, mind/body connection, and about an inch and a half of additional height. By balancing and neutralizing tensions, I’ve learned to relieve as well as to avoid the aches and pain caused by the thousands of natural shocks that flesh is heir to.”
- Kevin Kline

“The Alexander Technique helped a long standing back problem, and to get a good night’s sleep after many years of tossing and turning.” -Paul Newman

“The greater the actor’s sensitivity and awareness of his body, the wider the range of choices or responses he can make for himself and his characters.” -Kelly McEvenue-The Actor And The Alexander Technique
